Morris Island Lighthouse

Morris Island Lighthouse off of Folly Beach, SC

well, this is a shot of the infamous lighthouse off of Folly Beach. We walked through the park area to get to it. It used to be on land but the beach erosion has worked itself around the lighthouse.  I will use this photo as a reference for my next painting. Stay tuned!

Beach Sunset

Ocean Sunset

Still on the acrylic kick but just for a bit! After my last work with Wild Flowers, I really liked the colors and movement so I decided to work a bit with the same color scheme but with a sunset over water look.
Ocean Sunset is acrylic on canvas, size 9.6 x 7 inches.
This painting is on view at Studio 151 Fine Art Gallery in Charleston.

Wild Flowers in the gallery

Wild Flowers
Acrylic on paper
matted and framed 16 x 20

This new painting started off with watercolors but I was looking for something more.... vibrant, darker, wild..... so I layered some acrylics on top and got a little wild with the paint, adding some here and there, flicking and swiping.... so I stepped back at one point and said.... "done!" Looks like wild flowers!

Painting Crabs with watercolor on YUPO paper

Ok, here are the first 3 stages of the crab painting.
I took a couple of the crabs from the reference photo and made up a composition that was appealing and carefully drawing it out on the Yupo paper. Yupo is a synthetic paper which is slick. The paint does not soak into the paper but dries on top.  The paint moves around and does it's own thing! So you never know how it will dry in the end!

Next, I decided to add some texture to the areas that I will leave white. This will tie in with the crabs and bring the painting to the edges. It also is designed to look like a crab net or cage, perhaps? I stamped in the designs with a piece of rubber matting, the kind that goes under area rugs.
When that had dried, I started to paint in the crab legs first and then start in on the bodies, allowing the legs to dry before starting the areas next to them so that the paints from legs would not blend in with the bodies.
I used Cerulean Blue, Permanent Rose and a bit of Hookers Green.

Tomorrow, I will add more of the crab legs!

Crab Catch

This photo is from one of our last crab catches just off our dock last fall. The water has been colder lately so the crabs are staying warm down in the mud somewhere!  I am guessing!  I have been thinking of crabs again and can't wait for the season to get going again. Fresh sweet crabs on a weekly basis is a pretty good thing! And in the mean while, I can paint them. This is the photo I have chosen as my reference so stay tuned for a step by step demo on painting crabs on yupo paper.
