It's early fall and I'm out fishing with Bruce on one of my favorite creeks. 

Oyster Creek, a little creek tributary off the Toogoodoo Creek.

I'm sure that is not the real name but that's what we call it because there are tons of oyster beds 

in the creek and there is an oyster farm towards the end of it. 

It was late afternoon and the sun was starting to go down. 

The fishing was slack so I pulled out the paints. Got a good start on it there 

but the gnats came out so had to put the finishing touches on the painting in my studio. 

But before this, the fishing was good!

5 Reds (Spot Tail Bass) and 2 Trout

And then.... the tide slacked out and the fish stopped running 

so I pull out my snacks and paints!

The sky just lights up in the fall and even though it is still summer in September, 

the sky is showing it's beautiful colors already. 

My friend, Anne took a photo for me from our dock since I didn't have my phone with me. 

The sky was awesome with pinks and light purples and the water was alive with the sky colors. 

Many of my small paintings are palette knife paintings on panels which is what this one is

and I often use these smaller paintings as studies for 

larger brush or palette

knife paintings.

The sunrise in June is light pinks and yellow 

under and this morning, 
there was a canopy of darkness leaving the sky with clouds. 
The summer greens are strong and vibrant and the all the colors reflect in the water. 
Lowcountry sunrise in the summer!

Perfect Wind For Sailing

Just a perfect wind for sailing a boat like this one! But no sailers today. 

I started to paint this from my dock but the wind was so strong that it was hard to paint while holding my pochade box and tripod with one hand. So I had to come in to finish. 

Would've been a fine sailing day though!

I took my time with this one and is a studio painting and is framed in 3" gold frame. Ready for the gallery!

Toogoodoo 365 Series

Boats on the sea wall.... new painting progress

On a recent trip to Florida in February, we enjoyed many days out on the water. It's no wonder that so many people migrate to south Florida, with that beautiful blue water and warm winter weather! 

On one of the days, we took the boat out on Biscayne Bay and had lunch at one of the restaurants close to Dinner Key Marina. These little dinghies were lined up on the sea wall as their sailing owners enjoyed their lunch as well. And as many of you know, I love to paint boats! So this is the photo reference for my next painting. It is a large one, 24 x 36 and it may take me a couple of days to complete so I decided to post my progress. 

My sketch is generally loosely done but I needed to make sure that the sea wall was straight and 

that the boat's angles were correct. Lots of perspectives to think about!

Once I figured out the right size canvas, it took me 2 days to make

sure the boats were correct as they "hang out" on the sea wall. 

This easel is my treasure find at an estate sale in Beaufort. I love the fact that it has a crank to raise and lower the easel height.  I have a feeling that I am going to need that feature on this one!

The easel thing to the right is perfect for my iPad. I use it for the color image while I paint.  And notice the dog bed at the bottom. Bella's day bed fits perfectly between the legs.

I normally print out a black and white image of my photo reference. 

It helps to guide me with the value changes of the painting. 

Here, I've taped it to the wall where my other recent paintings dry. I normally tape it to

the easel above the canvas but this one was too long.

I don't have a name for this painting yet.

Edisto Beach is very close to our home south of Charleston.

It is our favorite beach to walk at.

Quite often, we are the only ones there! Of course, in the summer... it s packed!

On this day, the clouds were big and boisterous with the threat of a summer shower. 

The tide was going out and the cloud reflections on the wet sand were magnificent.

These pelicans are here to welcome you all to Charleston and

a special shout out to SEWE visitors!

These pelicans were on a boat at Shem Creek

as they waited for the fishermen to cast off their tidbits (pelican appetizers)

for their own happy hour!

This is the second painting of Girl On The Beach.

The first one I did on a 5 x 7 panel

using a palette knife.

This one is on a linen panel and I used my brushes.

So the image is the same but the texture and finish have completely different looks.

Pelicans sitting on the swim platform 

of a boat waiting for the fishermen to

throw them a bite from the day's catch.

At the end of a fishing trip offshore with my husband and friends,

we returned to the dock at Shem Creek where the restaurants offer

a happy hour for the clientele after a day's work or fishing,

the pelicans also gathered for their day's end treat!

we sailed around this beautiful lighthouse.

Happens to be on a state park out on Biscayne Bay.

I am leaving him alone and even though he 

thinks he is hiding from me, he's not!

Great Blue Heron

While I was contemplating the larger heron painting

I decided to tackle a smaller version without trees.

This little gem of a painting is great for that little spot on the wall as it is only 4" wide.

But in doing this painting, it helped me to get my composition right

for the larger version with trees. 

This is the blue heron that was trying to hide from us!

Little did he know, that we shot him!

With the camera that is and he has made some great inspirations for me.

He was in flight a few seconds before this little stop in the shallows

so I'm hoping to capture his flight on canvas soon!

RECOVERED!

Well, as you know, I posted this bird several days ago and that was after several

days of fiddling with him.  I found that I was bothered by him... I couldn't figure it out, 

until

I realized.... it was the composition that bothered me!

Even though I thought I had it right, I didn't. But I had to sleep on it

for several nights before I did figure it out.

So, the Great Blue Heron that was hiding from us (though he was in plain sight)

went back on the easel (for the 3rd time) and was totally redone. 

I took away the "other" trees and did less of the grasses. 

But it was the trees that just didn't make it work... in my eyes. 

So, if you want, you can look at the old post and compare to this new one

and 

what do you think?

I do know..... art is in the eye of the beholder

and everyone sees things differently

but the wrong composition was definitely not helping!

Great Blue Heron, Hiding in Plain Sight

Great Blue Heron, Hiding in Plain  Sight

As Bruce and I were on a walk at ACE Basin a couple of days ago,

we walked upon the big, beautiful Blue Heron. He was perched high up on a tree.

He took several photos of him as we approached, us watching him, him watching us...

As we got close, I waved my arms and OFF he went! Wings flapping, beak squawking.

He tried to get away from us and found a place to hide nestled in the shallows and among some small trees and grass. He thought he was hiding.  But Bruce's nifty new camera found him!

It was a cool, gray, overcast day. He almost blended in with his surroundings, 

BUT....  here he is.

A little GEM!

White Point is a beautiful corner of the lowcountry situated in Wadmalaw Sound

right where the Stono River meets up with the N Edisto River 

and just around the corner from Toogoodoo Creek.

On this little spit of land that comes off of White Point 

is a beachy area and a great little composition of palmetto trees and pine trees 

that reflect into the water and always showcases the beautiful sky.
