September Sunset

September Sunset
5 x 7
palette knife oil painting on panel

The sky just lights up in the fall and even though it is still summer in September,
the sky is showing it's beautiful colors already.
My friend, Anne took a photo for me from our dock since I didn't have my phone with me.
The sky was awesome with pinks and light purples and the water was alive with the sky colors.
Many of my small paintings are palette knife paintings on panels which is what this one is
and I often use these smaller paintings as studies for
larger brush or palette
knife paintings.

Here is the reference photo I painted from.

Sailer's Delight by Rosie Phillips

 Sailer's Delight
6 x 6
oil on panel

What's the saying?
Red sky in the morning, sailer's warning
Red Sky at night, sailer's delight.

Well, it's not really a red sky but with the bright orangey sunset sky
it reminded me of that saying.
And anyway, wouldn't this be a
"sailer's delight"?
Just to be here?
Would be mine!

Corner of Church and Broad Streets

Corner of Church And Broad Streets
Charleston SC
oil on canvas, gallery wrapped
24 x 30

One evening, after leaving the gallery downtown, the sunset glow on the buildings
was just beautiful! So with my phone, I snapped a photo and knew
that it would be a painting one day.
This is a large one for me, 24 x 30.
It took me 2 days just to draw it out! And many more to paint.

St Phillips Church at Sunset

St Phillips Church at Sunset
(updated painting)

I was looking at this painting while in the gallery the other day
and thought..... hmmm.....
The palm trees really are behind those buildings that really are just drab
and plain back side of the buildings that really are there.....
But I think that the painting will be more interesting if I move the palm trees!
So, I did. I uprooted the palms and replanted them to be in front of the buildings.
I like it much better. What do you think?
That is "artistic license"!

Moonrise Over the Creek

Moonrise Over the Creek
oil on museum grade panel
12 x 12

This is my latest painting.....
sometimes, it's hard to find my inspiration
but then, it happens
The moon is rising early in the evening these last few days so the light
is still good but yet there are some wonderful reflections.
It is a beautiful thing to see a full moon rise over water.
With this painting, the moon will always be full and rising over the creek!
Bruce has a new camera and he is having fun running out and capturing photos.
Moonrise Over the Creek was inspired from one his photos!
Thanks honey!

Sunset Palm Triptych by Rosie Phillips

Sunset Palm Triptych
oil on 3 panels, 14 x 8
(4 x 8, 6 x 8, 4 x 8)

Thinking of warm days and evenings!
Even though it is not as cold in Charleston SC
as the rest of the country or world, it is still colder than what I like!
So, in hopes of warming up
I look at the warm sunset glow and I feel all better and warm!
I had painted a similar palm and sunset about a year ago but I decided to break this one up onto 3 panels that are hung besides each other with a little space in between each panel. A Triptych!
Now, don't you feel warmer?

Sunset at White Point

Sunset at White Point
oil on canvas
5 x 7 in 3" gold frame

A little GEM!
White Point is a beautiful corner of the lowcountry situated in Wadmalaw Sound
right where the Stono River meets up with the N Edisto River
and just around the corner from Toogoodoo Creek.
On this little spit of land that comes off of White Point
is a beachy area and a great little composition of palmetto trees and pine trees
that reflect into the water and always showcases the beautiful sky.

Well, we forgot to take pictures of the reception last night! But I am happy to report that the gallery and I had a great turn out. Lots of interest in and sales, not only in my art, as I am the FEATURED ARTIST in May but also in some of the other great ART we have in the gallery.
Despite the cooler temps and a bit of drizzle, we were very excited to greet you all!
It was also French Quarter Artwalk so we had plenty of art lovers in the area.
Thanks for coming by and stay in touch!

Like I said!
We forgot to take pics during the event but here I am at the gallery door after setting up the exhibit.

Lowcountry Sunset, SC

My latest painting, Lowcountry Sunset, SC is my version of the fabulous view of the Toogoodoo Creek and marsh across the way from where I live. The sun changes, then the water colors change, the birds fly and the marsh glows in the late afternoon sun. This version was created from the colors that magically appear in the late afternoons during late fall! I painted this scene with a limited palette of Cobalt Blue, Permanent Rose, Hansa Yellow, Hookers Green and Quinacridone Burnt Orange and on Arches 140lb watercolor paper.
Here is a photo though this does NOT do the actual view justice! But it is one of my inspirations for Lowcountry Sunset, SC.
